Allergy Symptoms & Allergy Relief

 August 3, 2010

Allergies can come in many forms and the symptoms can vary greatly.  In general allergy symptoms involve swelling of one kind or another.  If your eyes are itchy and red they’re swollen.  If your nose is itchy and runny your sinuses are swollen.  If you have difficulty breathing and swallowing your throat or air passages may be swollen.  According to familydoctor.org allergy symptoms can include rashes (skin is swollen), itchiness, hives and in more severe cases vomiting, diarrhea, cramps, abdominal pain and mental confusion & dizziness.

The more severe allergy symptoms may show up as part of a larger reaction called anaphylaxis.  Anaphylaxis is a very severe reaction that can be life threatening.  Airborne allergens rarely cause anaphylaxis.  Most cases are due to food allergies, drug allergies or bug bites/stings according to heatlhcentral.com.

The first line of defense for allergies is avoidance.

If you’re allergy symptoms are brought on by pollen try to keep the doors and windows closed, use air conditioning in the house and the car, after being out wash your hands, face and hair to remove the pollen.

Pet dander can cause allergy symptoms in many people as well.  The avoidance techniques are similar to pollen.  Webmd.com says wash your pet frequently, vacuum your home and furniture frequently, use allergy resistant bedding, and finally limit the areas of the home the pet can enter – no bedroom or bed access.

For mold allergies, keep the humidity levels below 50% in your home, get rid of any carpet in the bathrooms or wet areas, use mold resistant paint, clean damp areas with a bleach and water solution and finally take the plants out of the house.

Allergy treatment can vary in approach and scope.  There are medical specialists that work only on allergies and they may try a variety of allergy treatments to find what works for you.  There are allergy shots, prescription drugs, over the counter drugs and nasal sprays.

Acupuncture is often very successful in allergy treatment.  Acupuncture works by balancing energy meridians in the body by inserting tiny needles into the proper points.  Many of my own patients have told me that they have had great success with their allergy symptoms using acupuncture.

Chiropractic adjustments can work well for some people to treat their allergies.  I have seen many people and helped them by correcting their subluxations and returning their nervous system to its proper function.

Another sort of allergy treatment may be successful in alleviating your allergy symptoms.  Some people with allergy symptoms are not allergic to everything they react to.  These people may have a condition called a hyper permeable bowel.  This is when your colon allows particles to pass through the colon wall that normally should not.  The particles can pass through because the openings for absorption have expanded as a result of there being too low a friendly flora count (friendly bacteria).  In other words the unfriendly flora like e-coli are at too high levels.  This creates a hyperactive state for your immune system because your body creates antibodies to attack the particle that make it through the colon wall.  So now you have reactions to allergens you normally would not.

The way to treat this hyper permeable bowel is to take a supplement to repopulate the colon with friendly flora.  You would need to take a supplement with acidophilus and bifidobacterium.  I recommend to my patients they take it for at least two weeks and sometimes three.  Just to let you know how it works I’ll tell you a story.  I had a patient that moved here from Israel in the late 90’s.  He had terrible allergy symptoms his first spring in New York.  His eyes watered, his nose ran worse than anyone you have ever seen.  I had him take the supplement use here in the office called Ultra Flora Plus by Metagenics.  2 days later his symptoms were nearly gone.  He said he sneezed once in a while but mostly his allergy symptoms were gone.  If you want to read a little more about Ultra Flora Plus click through to my store and sign up.  There will be a little more information available inside.

Please let me know what you think of this article.  I would love to share your experience.
